The Process of Formation of Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC):

A meeting of following members designated as Core Committee under the chairmanship of the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor was held on Tuesday, 3rd August 2004 for initial planning.

Following issues were discussed:

1.         Formation of Internal Quality Assurance Cells (IQACs) at the levels of University and constituent units.

2.         Guidelines on formation and further activities of IQAC-if any-in addition to the guidelines given by NAAC.

3.         Review the suggestions and observations of the Peer Team pertaining to University and constituent units, and implement relevant actions.

4.         Establishment of a broad-based committee at University level for periodic assessment of University and constituent units’ Quality Assurance work.

 

The Core Committee submitted its report to the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor on 23rd August 2004. As per the recommendations of the Core Committee, IQAC was constituted at the university level. Considering the wide scope of educational and research activities of the University, number of experts from diverse fields from within and outside the University was nominated to Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC).

The IQAC of the University in its first meeting held on 1st September 2004 took up the issue of focusing on the valuable suggestions made in the NAAC Peer Team Report 2004. The members felt that by acting on those suggestions, the University can indeed show significant improvements. Thorough deliberations followed on the Peer Team Report and policies related to quality assurance. Accordingly, a plan of action was finalized for the year 2004-05.

 

The plan of action was disseminated to all the constituent units. The units were also advised to develop their own plan of action specific to their faculty. The IQAC monitored the activities of IQACs of constituent units throughout the year. On conclusion of the academic year, reports generated by the constituent units’ IQACs were reviewed by IQAC at its meeting held on Friday, 15th July 2005. These reports were then compiled to draft the Annual Quality Assurance Report (AQAR) of the University for the academic year 2004-2005.


PART A

PLAN OF ACTION

 

Plan of Action & Outcome:

 

 

1.                  Prepare a five-year perspective plan of the University.

After extensive brainstorming sessions, a 5-year perspective plan for future growth and development of the university was finalized in consultation with the constituent units.

2.            Develop Quality Management System in the University.

      All constituent units have established IQACs to monitor quality of educational activities.

3.            Adopt policy of vertical growth over that of horizontal.

      The steps towards the vertical growth are being adopted by:

i.                    Strengthening the Research and Development component.

ii.                 Collaborative activities with academic and other organizations.

iii.               Introduction of new academic programmes.

4.            Focus efforts to make the University a globally well-known institute.

i.                    A committee is being appointed to explore the options.

ii.                 International Students’ Cell was established. Extra efforts were taken to enroll more international students.

iii.               Initiate procedures for inclusion of colleges of Bharati Vidyapeeth under the ambit Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University for uniformity and consolidation of faculty-wise gains.

iv.               Directorate was established for promoting sports activities.

v.                  Directorate was established for strengthening cultural activities.

1)               ACTIVITIES REFLECTING THE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT

 

            Highlights of activities of various constituent units:

 

            Academic:

1.                  Admissions to all the courses offered by the University are merit-based. Admission process was completed smoothly, and all the courses could be started on schedule. The University strictly adhered to the norms prescribed by the respective Statutory Councils. All the constituent units initiated their academic activities with the following established practices:

 

·               Orientation sessions for the newly admitted students and their parents.

·               Counseling of students and a strict vigil to prevent ragging.

·               Planning a calendar of academic, examination, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities at the beginning of the year.

 

2.                  The University offers opportunities to the students to complete certificate, diploma and advanced diploma courses as value additions to UG and PG degree courses.

·               The MBA and BCA syllabi were modified and introduced.

·               MBA: Subjects such as Environmental Management, Information Technology, Agri. Business Management, Managerial Skills Development, Project Management, and Management Information Systems were introduced.

·               MBA-IT: Subjects such as Knowledge Management, Information Systems Audit, E-Business and Cyber Laws, Project Management, Managerial Skills Development were introduced.

·               MBA-HR: Application oriented subjects such as Applied Psychology, Managerial Skills Development, Information Technology, Management Science and Decision technologies, Human Resource Information System, Managerial Interpersonal and Group Processes, HRD Instruments, Cross Cultural and Global Management, Organization Development and Change Management were introduced.

·               BCA: Subjects such as Information System Audit, Hardware Maintenance & Computer Networks were introduced.

·               Six-week course on Tally software was initiated for BBA II students.

 

      New Law College, Pune

·               Fifteen judicial colloquia and legal discourses with eminent Justices of Supreme Court and High Courts on diverse topics in Law were held.

·               Student and faculty exchange programme was established with six UK universities for promoting international legal education.

·               International seminar on Indo-British Legal Ties was conducted.

 

      Institute of Environment Education & Research, Pune

·               The programmes of the Institute include formal environment education, non-formal educational activities presentation at conferences and research. These independent spheres of activities have been integrated to augment the effectiveness of all three components. The Institute runs a program in PhD, Masters of Environment Science and Diploma in Environment Education.

·               Non-formal environment education outreach initiatives, which included conducting training workshops for teachers in environment education, programmes through trained teachers, and developing locale specific environment education material were taken. The institute also houses an Environment Museum and Activity Centre, which is used by teachers and students as a teaching-learning resource.

·               The research done at the institute focused on need- based issue of pro-conservation action by arranging 10 field visits for Quadrate sampling, Wildlife population count, Insect identification studies, Plant conservation, and to study Ecotourism, wildlife conflicts and its management.

 

      Poona College of Pharmacy, Pune

·               Invited lectures/ seminars by eminent international and national scholars on topics “beyond the curriculum” like: High throughput screening, Emerging areas in biotechnology, Pharma export, How to face interview, Communication skills, Calcium channel blockers, Advances in herbal and biotechnology research, Future in pharma marketing, Clinical trials, and Opportunities for research collaborations were arranged.

 

      Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Information Technology & Biotechnology, Pune

·               Graduate programme syllabus was detailed and postgraduate biotechnology course structure was formulated based on UGC model curriculum.

·               Visits were arranged to biotechnology companies, apiculture centre and for plant collection.

·               Guest lectures were arranged on Immunology, Cell biology and Genetics.

 

      Yashwantrao Chavan Institute of Social Science Studies & Research, Pune

·               The MBS (Master in Business Studies) course included a few core theory papers and a few specialized papers (Marketing, HRD & IT & Dual specialization of HR + IT & Marketing + IT).

·               Three workshops were organized on topics such as Total quality management, Personality development and negotiation skills, Colloquium on sustainable environment-Role of civil society, and Women’s Day in perspective.

·               Interaction sessions were arranged to increase the awareness among students about the business environment with leading industries.

 

      Interactive Research School for Health Affairs, Pune:

·               Nutrition was identified as thrust area considering its importance in human health and disease.

 

      College of Physical Education, Pune

·               This is the only second institute in the country that offers a bi-focal course that enables the graduates to get employed as general education teachers as well as physical education teachers.

·               Special Lectures on Physical Education and Sports Science, and Common sports injuries were arranged.

·               Study tour was organized to Army Physical Training College, Pune.

·               Community projects were assigned to undergraduates.

·               Seminars/ workshops were conducted in various fields for the benefit of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

·               Institute of Environment has provided Consultancy to:

i)          Consultancy was provided by the Environment Education and Research, Pune to Maharashtra Government Organizations, namely Textbook Bureaus, State Council of Education, Research and Training (Government of Maharashtra) to develop new model textbooks, and to Ministry of Environment and Forests.

ii)        Institute was selected by Ministry of Environment & Forests (Govt. of India) as Resource Agency for Maharashtra State for its National Green Corps Programme.

·                     Community Led Environment Action Network (CLEAN-India) programme has been embarked upon with focus on air and water quality analysis in different parts of the city by school students.

·                     The School Environment Education Programme has been initiated for project "Conservation Education for critically important National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries through a comprehensive environment education programme".

      New Law College, Pune

·               NSS Unit has designed activities (free legal aid, legal literacy camp, women’s rights awareness camp, free legal aid clinic) in order to provide social justice at no cost to people at their doorstep.

·               The institute also established a Centre for Women’s Legal Studies to facilitate gender justice and equal justice in Indian society.

·               The institute faculty worked as officials for Pune International Marathon Trust.

·               Gymnasium facilities were extended to community.

5)            EXAMINATION REFORMS IMPLEMENTED

 

University Examination Section undertook the following administrative reforms:

·                     Replacement of traditional sealing wax seal by non-removable stickers in order to make question papers and other confidential material tamper proof.

·                     All strong rooms used for storing question papers are protected by grills and are provided with special security.

·                     Use of special ink on Degree certificates to prevent malpractice.

·                     Incorporation of candidate’s photograph on the Degree Certificate.

·                     Use of sophisticated fast scanners with software for in-house printing of degree certificates.

 

·                     Eight papers under each elective criterion and two Departmental Papers per programme per semester are introduced which are evaluated internally for Management faculty.

·                     New examination pattern has been introduced as per the new syllabus of BHMS.

 

·                     Two class tests were introduced for every subject in semester-I, as well as, continuous evaluation system was introduced in practical courses in the faculty of Engineering.

k)                 NSS Unit of Poona College of Pharmacy, Pune organized 1-day community pharmacy programme at Mulshi (Dist. Pune).

 

l)                   NSS Unit of Institute of Management and Entrepreneurship Development, Pune organized lecture on need for AIDS awareness, Poster making competition, Tree plantation, Gandhi Jayanti Celebrations, and State level conference on Disaster Management.

m)               ‘Garbh  Sanskar’ a programme for the would-be-mothers guiding them regarding comprehensive antenatal care has been started by Dept. of Obstetrics & Gynecology Medical College & Hospital, Pune.

n)                 NSS Unit of Homoeopathic Medical College, Pune: Prevention and treatment of Chicken Guniya patients at Umerga (Osmanabad).

o)                 College of Ayurved: 36 health camps were organized benefiting 3500 patients. NSS unit organized a camp at Shidewadi.

p)                 NSS Unit of College of Engineering, Pune: During winter camp, road surveying and shramadan was carried out in villages. 654 student volunteers participated in this activity.

q)                 Dental College & Hospital, Pune: 36 dental check-up camps were conducted through the year benefiting 10538 patients. NSS Unit organized 5 dental check-up and health education camps, and annual tree plantation programme.

r)                 Institute of Management, Kolhapur: Distribution of blankets to flood-affected people.

The support obtained from the Alumni Association varied from unit to unit. The support is of following nature.

·                     Modernization and up-gradation of facilities.

31)        ACTIVITIES AND SUPPORT FROM PARENT-TEACHER ASSOCIATION

 

·                     On the opening day of the college, parents-students meetings were organized to introduce the institute, its culture, discipline, examination pattern, ragging policy and disciplinary matters.

·                     The suggestions of parents were invited and considered for improvement.

 

32)        HEALTH SERVICES

·                     The services of Medical College Hospital, Dental College Hospital, Homoeopathy College Hospital and Ayurved College Hospital are made available to all the students, staff members (teaching and non-teaching).

·                     Health Scheme is in operation for all the teaching and non-teaching staff and their families with nominal contribution.

·                     All the foreign students were medically examined and screened with laboratory investigations.

·                     The University through its own hospitals organized health check-up for all the newly admitted students.

·                     Hepatitis B vaccination provided to students and staff of health sciences with a view to protect them against professional risk.

 

33)        PERFORMANCE IN SPORTS ACTIVITIES

            Students of constituent units are encouraged to actively participate in sports at all the levels. Some of the students have excelled at various inter-university, state and national level events. 13 students won in individual events, while 41 students were members of winning teams.


 

34)        INCENTIVES TO OUTSTANDING SPORTS PERSONS

·                     Special concession in attendance was granted for both theory and practical classes for sports person representing the college at various competitions.

·                     Yashwantrao Mohite Arts, Science & Commerce College, Pune: Up to 50% concession in tuition fees, Free medical assistance, Nutritious diet and Cash prizes.

·                     Special coaching was provided to students selected for inter-university matches.

·                     Extra classes were specially conducted for these sportspersons to make up for the lost portions in both theory and practical.

·                     Achievements of sports persons were publicly acknowledged by display of congratulatory posters and felicitated.

·                     Outstanding sportspersons for the year were awarded certificates and shield in specially organized functions.

·                     Two students were awarded with Gold and Silver medals in 4 national level “Moto-cross” open competitions.

·                     Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Information Technology & Biotechnology, Pune: First three ranks and consolation prize in State Level General Knowledge test.

·                     Institute of Environment Education and Research, Pune: Merit scholarship was awarded to 1 student.

·                     New Law College, Pune: 2nd Prize won by team at the 9th State Level Moot Court competition organized by Bar Council of Maharashtra & Goa.

·                     Consolation prize in Justice Ranade Elocution competition.

·                     1st prize in Vedanta Youth Festival debate competition.

·                     3rd prize in Greater Pune debate competition.

·                     Homoeopathic Medical College, Pune: Consolation prize in debate competition organized by Beacon Foundation, Mumbai.

·                     College of Ayurved, Pune: Three students won 3rd prize in elocution competition and a student won 2nd prize in drawing competition. One student acted in TV serials and feature films.

·                     College of Nursing, Pune: 2nd prize in classical dance competition at SNA Biennial Conference at Karad.

·                     2nd prize is bagged in dance and singing competitions at Rotary Club, Pune

·                     Institute of Management, Kolhapur: Best NCC Cadet and 1st Prize in project presentation.

·                     From the constituent units in all 154 students participated in three different National Workshops / Conferences.

 

36)        ACTIVITIES OF THE GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING UNIT

·                     It is a routine practice in this university to obtain student feedback about the facilities like faculty, teaching programmes, academic calendar, teaching methodology, etc. Students having difficulties of academic, communication, personal and psychological nature are identified and are given special attention and assistance.

·                     Teacher-ward system was continued.

·                     Tutorials and re-tests were conducted for academically weaker students.

·                     Practice of getting periodic feedback from students through a questionnaire continued.

Yashwantrao Mohite Arts, Science & Commerce College, Pune:

·                     Ten Training Sessions held. In addition, 24 dignitaries visited the various institutes and delivered lectures for students and faculty on Dhankawadi and Erandawane campus.

·                     I-Mantra, the HR system consultant conducted a seminar on, ‘Career opportunities in Business Process Outsourcing Industries’ on Erandawane Campus of the BVDU.

·                     1-day seminar for students on ‘Placement Opportunities in Service Industry like Air lines, Hotels, Air Catering, Multinational Companies and Call Centers’; Intel workshop on ‘Unwire Your Future’; and Seminar conducted by Air Hostess Academy, Pune on ‘Opportunities in Aviation and Hospitality Industry.

·                     New Law College, Pune: Students were trained for personality development and interview technique.

·                     Institute of Management & Entrepreneurship Development, Pune: Training was provided to students not only in basic aspects, but also in the domain areas such as Finance, Human Resource, International Business, Marketing and Information technology. The institute also initiated the process of providing part-time internships to enhance the understanding of the work environment.

·                     Yashwantrao Chavan Institute of Social Science Studies & Research, Pune:  Students were exposed to mock- interviews.

 

 

38)        DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES FOR NON-TEACHING STAFF

·                     The non-teaching staff in the University and the constituent units is given training in various fields such as, Organizational Management, Computer operation, Accounts software etc.

·                     The family members of the non-teaching staff are given preference in employment and children are given fee concession.

·                     There is a system of promotion for higher administrative posts.

·                     A special training was given to the non-teaching staff of the College of Physical Education, Pune on marking of play grounds.

·                     College of Engineering, Pune had organized two training programmes on maintenance of CRE laboratory for the technical staff and on communication skills for the non-teaching staff.

·                     Two sessions were organized by the Institute of Management, Kolhapur on Computer basics and Accounting software.

1.                  Institute of Management & Entrepreneurship Development, Pune: The institute has established IQAC as early as August 2002. The cell holds regular meetings and plans and reviews the activities. A Student Handbook containing all relevant information, academic calendar, and rules and regulations has been prepared and distributed among students. Domain wise departments were formed and decision-making was decentralized leading to better functionality.

2.                  Institute of Environment Education & Research, Pune:

                                               ·          Involving the students in all the extension activities and projects.

                                               ·          Advocacy on various conservation and environmental issues at the state and national levels.

3.                  Yashwantrao Mohite Arts, Science & Commerce College, Pune: Earn while you learn scheme, Social commitments through financial contributions to various NGOs, Ladies Association for girls, and Staff Academy for faculty development.

4.                  Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Information Technology & Biotechnology, Pune: Dress codes for students.

5.                  College of Physical Education, Pune: Collaboration with Pune International Marathon Trust in organizing the marathon race.

6.                  New Law College, Pune: Centre for studies in Human Rights Law for creating awareness among the students, staff and the society, especially for women empowerment, legal illiteracy, consumer awareness, labour dispute, rights of HIV positive patients, Special Marriage Act, domestic violence and prohibition of dowry- through talks, street plays, seminars, counseling. 

Free legal aid is provided. Conducted Lectures on Spoken English and Communication Skills for foreign students. Centre for Women’s Legal Studies for general population is actively engaged in creating awareness about Role of Women in Law for maintenance and family disputes through its Counseling Centre. Advice is given free of cost.

7.                  Medical College & Hospital, Pune: Active efforts for promotion of ‘Body donation drive’ and access to anatomy museum for school children and BVU institutes. ‘Garbh  Sanskar’- a programme for the would be mothers by Dept. of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

8.                  Dental College & Hospital, Pune: Continuation of practice of offering academic counseling to weaker students. Coaching in English language to 1st tear students to improve comprehension of dental subjects. Faculty members enrolled for PG programme were provided the benefit of continued salaries and leave for advanced training.

9.                  College of Nursing, Pune: A total of 17 committees have been constituted to plan and monitor various curricular, co-curricular, extra-curricular and administrative activities of the institute. Out of these, undergraduate student representation is taken on 10 committees.


 

10.              College of Engineering, Pune:

·                     Faculty Development Program: Faculty members are encouraged to acquire higher education such as M.E. & Ph.D.
