Introduction

The Institute of Environment Education & Research is a unique educational and research institution. It is known for its international collaborations with reputed universities from Germany and Netherlands. Under these collaborations, joint research, student and faculty exchange, joint field work by students are facilitated. It has a vibrant research program that focuses on geospatial technologies, landscape ecology, wildlife conservation, environmental and cultural heritage and environmental law. Its outreach programmes have influenced a pro-conservation attitude among thousands of school going children. The institute offers diploma, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in Environmental Science and Technology and Geoinformatics.

  • Recommendations of the Institute’s project ’Study of infusion of environmental concepts in school curricula and the effectiveness of its delivery’ resulted in new school level environment textbooks for all the states of the country.
  • Setup of the first dedicated portal for geospatial education in India commissioned by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. (www.dst-igt.in)
  • Established collaborations for joint field work, semester exchange programmes, International internship with the University of Cologne, Germany and with the Maastricht University, Netherlands for Masters and Doctoral programmes
  • Part of four-nation project (Germany, Mexico, South Africa and India) on ‘Education for Sustainable Development’ (ESD) for mainstreaming ESD in India
  • Resource Agency for the National Green Corps programme for Maharashtra which reaches out to 9050 schools in the state since 2002
  • Appointed as the Regional Resource Agency for the ‘DNA Clubs Programme’ of the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India for the states of Goa and Maharashtra since 2007
