About Department

In the context of Ayurved, Samhita is indicative of the ‘Classical Medical Treatises of India.’ The focus of this department is to introduce the newcomers and acclimatize them to the scientific foundation of Ayurvedic knowledge base which is documented in Sanskrit language. Also, Sanskrit is taught as a subject so that the students have a better understanding of the Ayurvedic medical concepts. Curricular details in all subjects of UG & PG courses are ultimately derived from ancient Samhitas only. Hence it is the nodal department & is connected to all 4 main examinations of BAMS (UG) course with 6 subjects namely Sanskrit, Padarth Vigyan & Ayurved Itihas, Maulik Siddhant evum Ashtang Hridayam and Charak Samhita (in two parts) and Research Methodology for MD Prelim and for fourth-year B. A. M.S.

Departmental Strength

  • Out of 6, 3 faculties are Ph.D. holders 
  • Out of 6, 2 have PG qualification in Sanskrit along with PG in Ayurved 
  • Two MD Students of this department have achieved the ‘Best Thesis Award in Bharati Vidyapeeth’ by IASTAM, India. 
  • To review the heritage of literature of Ayurved manuscripts, the department conducts regular visits to renowned institutes like Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, Pune. 
  • To keep pace with contemporary research the faculties have frequent interactions with respective authorities & experts. 
  • Our faculties are invited as resource persons in the discussions carried through seminars regarding commentaries on ancient Ayurved treatise.

  • The department grew manifold by using the original ancient Sanskrit classical treatises and commentaries. 
  • The department has rare and unique manuscripts having all the information related to Ayurveda.
  • There is an exhaustive and a great collection of Dictionaries & Triskandhakosha
  • With an aim to draw the interest of the students in Samhitas, the department conducts activities like Shloka recitation & essay writing competitions annually. 
  • Open Book Exam is held for meticulous learning of the Samhita 
  • Apart from the conventional learning and teaching, students are encouraged to ask questions on Sutras /Shlokas to each other in a competing way during a verbal tutorial.

Achievements

The faculty of the Ayurveda College continues to scale new heights as they have won awards on various platforms for their work.

  • Dr. Ganashyam Dongre, an alumnus of this department, has been awarded the Chancellor's Gold Medal of BV(DU) in its commencement year i.e., in 2002. 
  • Dr. Hemal Trivedi (2016) and Dr. ShrutiGadgil (2017) the two MD Students of this department have achieved the ‘Best Thesis Award in BharatiVidyapeeth’ given by BV(DU) Pune and IASTAM, India. 
  • We are proud of our alumni Dr. Rishabh Jain who has reached up to the post of director of an Ayurved College and Hospital at Rurki, India.
