Recent Developments in Information Technology

The Department of Computer Science conducted One Day Seminar on “Recent Developments in Information Technology” on Tuesday, 19th September 2006.

The Seminar  was inaugurated at the auspicious hands of Hon. Mr. Deepak Shikarpur, Director &CEO Autoline Dimensions Engineering Services Pvt. Ltd, Pune. Hon. Dr. S.F.Patil , Vice-chancellor Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University presided over the function.

            The inaugural function started with the introduction given by the coordinator Mrs.Supriya.S.Shukla. In her introductory speech she elaborated  the purpose of arranging this Seminar. The main objective of the seminar was to expose students and teachers to the recent trends and emerging technologies in the IT field. She further added that the information technology is revolutionizing the way in which we live and work. Computers and communication have become integral part of teaching and learning process. She also gave a brief account of the activities of the department.

  The Chief Guest Mr.Deepak Shikarpur pointed that even though Marathi students have enough potential and intelligence they lag behind in the competitive field due to lack of English fluency. So to cope up with the challenges in the IT field he urged them to learn one foreign language along with English.Information Technology being changing field he told the students to always update their knowledge.

         The chairperson Hon Dr. S.F. Patil, in his presidential speech asked the students not only to achieve academic excellence but also keep themselves technically updated. He appreciated various co-curricular and curricular activities performed and undertaken by Yashwantrao Mohite College. He pointed that this college may be the first college in India running  courses in the field of science, Commerce and arts under the banner of Deemed University .

        Principal K.D.Jadhav highlighted goals and objectives of Bharati Vidyapeeth and emphasized various activities of the college. Vote of thanks was given by Vice-Principal Dr.H.P. Deshmukh. The comparing was done  by Mrs. R. Patil.

After inaugural function technical sessions were conducted.The first   session was conducted by Mr. Harold Dcosta on Internet Securities. He explained Internet as a medium for communication among consumers, businesses and governments. There are estimated more than a billion Internet users, of which 50 million are in India. Anybody connected to the Internet has the risk of an information security breach. There are various types of attacks, like Scanning, Fragmentation, Denial of Service, Distributed Denial of Service, Buffer Overflows, SQL Injection, Backdoors and Trojans, Viruses and Worms. Malware is a generic term  for different types of malicious code like Virus, Worms, Trojans, Spyware.
He explained some ways to prevent Malware viz,  scan the software before installation, do not open unknown mails like win $100, love you etc, bank transaction should not to be done from unauthorized place.For security purpose we should create password which is alphanumeric or special characters like dollar sign ($),asterisk(*),Hash(#) etc.
In the second session Dr.S.D.Gore, Co-ordinator MCA Program Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University I.M.E.D Pune gave guidelines on .Effective searching and surfing on world wide web.He stated that to search a particular topic, we should use more than one search engine so the details available are compared to get reliable result. Goggle Search is considered as the best search engine for any topic. We should always scan the first two pages of result and instead of finding quantitative information one should go for qualitative information.

The third  session was conducted by Mr. SatishKumar Agrawal on IT ProjectManagement Technical Manager,Persistent Systems,Pune.He stressed that project management should be given importance in the academic curriculum.He gave guidelines for implementation of project work and also elaborated the actual designing of the project in the organization with illustrations.He acquainted the students with the management levels in  designing software projects and gave the golden rule of Project Management in three words

-Organize
-control   

In the fourth  session  Mr. Aniruddha Joshi, Department of Management Science from University of Pune gave importance of  Networking Securities.He emphasized the  importance of network security using firewalls, proxy server and croptography.He explained the type of firewalls as application gateways, packets filtering and hybrid system . Also classified the network threats and gave guidelines to prevent unauthorised access. He enlightened the ways to protect network using –

  • alternative backup of data
  • aviod  sysrems with single point of failure
  • stay current with revelent operating system patch
  • watch for revelent security advisors

Each session was well supported by interactive session in which  students and lecturers participated. Seminar was attended by 50 lecturers gathered from various colleges from Pune, Mumbai , Satara, Sangli & Sholapur District and 40 students from Yashwantrao Mohite College.  Ms.S.N. Ghogare reviewed the activities completed during the seminar.The participants expressed their satisfaction by commenting that the above seminar  attended  was the most interesting and fruitful seminars which they have attended so far. The participants received the certificates of participation in the valedictory function chaired by Dr.M.S.Prasad, Dean of Management, Bharati Vidyapeeth  Deemed University I.M.E.D. Pune. All computer science , science faculty members and the graduate students of the college were actively involved in organizing the seminar.
