The Dental Education Unit (DEU) at Bharati Vidyapeeth Dental College, Navi Mumbai, focuses on improving student outcomes by training faculty, promoting research, and supporting a learner-centric curriculum. It fosters ethical, compassionate learning, aligns education with community needs, and collaborates with experts.

The DEU trains faculty in modern methods, supports professional development, and manages quality assurance. Through continuous curriculum improvement and resource development, it enhances dental education's effectiveness and relevance.

Activities:

  • To impart training in educational methods and technology* to the faculty of BVDU Dental College & Hospital, Navi Mumbai and of other dental colleges in the region and the country.
  • To develop expertise required for performing the role of competent and effective teacher, administrator, researcher and mentor.
  • To update knowledge using modern information and research methodology tools. Sustain a learner-centric, competency-based and outcome-driven dynamic dental curriculum.
  • Conduct training programs in educational research methodology, statistics and evidence based methods.
  • Develop a resource collection consisting of books, journals and journal articles, monographs, computer media, curricula, syllabi, course modules, question banks, quality standards, etc. relevant to educational science, technology, and research.
  • Establish linkages with units, organisations, associations, and such entities that promote health professionals’ education and research. Inspire and support research and innovations by faculty through assistance in developing implementable proposals.
  • Train faculty in and manage Quality Assurance Processes**.
  • Constitute a panel of resource persons.

Standard Operating Procedures:

General: Related to Committee composition, functioning, meetings and record, distribution of tasks, requesting the Principal to co-opt members, organisation of training sessions including feedback and reporting, webpage creation and maintenance, social media presence Activity.

Roles and Responsibilities:

1. Responsibility of Administrative assistant :

  • To do all the clerical work related to DEU
  • To communicate with the members of the DEU and update them about the meetings and activities
  • To record the minutes of meeting
  • To maintain the records

2. Responsibility of Coordinator-Academic development:

  • To communicate with all the students and convey the messages regarding the committee decisions
  • To integrate activities of dental education unit with academic programs
  • To act as a bridge between the committee and the academic curriculum
  • To convey the gaps present between the academic development and existing curriculum through feedback systems to the DEU

3. Responsibility of Coordinator- Quality Assurance

  • To attend each and every meetings with active participation
  • To act as a quality monitor for the activities conducted by DEU and other committees
  • To integrate record keeping amongst the academic and quality development
  • To activate the quality mandates by various governing agencies into the DEU activities

4. Responsibility of Chief Coordinator

  • To supervise the entire committee activities and record keeping
  • To act on the road map constructed by DEU for the welfare of all stakeholders
  • To maintain communication within all the committee members
  • To follow the instructions laid down by the university and Head of the DEU
  • To prepare the activity calendar for the academic year
  • To be responsible for conducting and organising the activities under DEU

5. Responsibility of DEU Head

  • To supervise the entire committee
  • To act in the overall development in the curriculum
  • To permit and screen the activities conducted under the wing of DEU
  • To communicate with the university regarding the unit developments
  • To synchronise the activities of DEU with other units of Bharati Vidyapeeth Dental Colleges.

Guidelines for organising meetings of Dental Education Unit

The meetings of Dental Education Unit are supposed to be held Minimum once in a month. All the members of the DEU are supposed to attend the meetings positively.

The members can meet more than once in a month depending on the requirement for the activity conduction by the Committee.

Guidelines for Conduction of Meeting:

  • 1. The decision to call for meetings will be taken by DEU Head, The Principal of the institute.
  • 2. The DEU Head and the Chief coordinator should decide and discuss the agenda of the meeting beforehand and it should be well informed to the members in advance.
  • 3. The meetings should be conducted in either the Dental Education Unit or in the Principal’s Office
  • 4. The members should be informed beforehand about the time, date and the venue of the meeting along with the agenda of the meeting.
  • 5. It should be ensured that at least 75% of the members should attend the meeting.
  • 6. Minutes of the meeting have to be prepared within the next 3 consecutive days and have to be signed by the attended members. The report of the same has to be filed and maintained.

Guidelines for Organising CDE /Workshop /Hands-on /Conference /Convention

  • 1. The workshops or events can be organised by the DEU for the training of faculty members in the form of CDE /Workshop /Hands-on /Conference /Convention.
  • 2. The CDE programs are usually of a short gathering in which the person specialised in a subject is invited to present on the same.
  • 3. The hands-on includes training and demonstration of practical procedures which one needs to apply in their practice.
  • 4. Workshops involve group discussion and also hands-on training of certain procedures. The conference and the conventions are meant for the huge gathering with the multiple speakers in it and it may have different workshops and the hands-on courses included in it.
  • 5. DEU organises these activities as per the annual calendar prepared and coordinated with different units of Bharati Vidyapeeth Dental Colleges.
  • 6. The information regarding the conduction, dates, place, participants and required infrastructure will be clearly intimated to the stakeholders at least 3 weeks in advance.
  • 7. The report of the activity will be prepared by the Chief coordinator and will be submitted to the Head of the Institute within 3 days of completion of the event.

Guidelines for conducting an innovative/ New teaching technique/Education practice/ Education project by any department

  • 1. Any department wishing to conduct any innovative teaching practice for the students/ peers/ education project, has to inform the DEU about the same in advance.
  • 2. The activity has to be prepared under the supervision of the DEU with appropriate procedures defined in advance by the committee.
  • 3. The proposal of the event/ research project has to be submitted and to be conducted after approval from the committee.
  • 4. The activity/ research project should take appropriate feedback from the stakeholders standardised by the DEU.
  • 5. The report of the activity/education project has to be submitted to the DEU after completion of the same within 3-5 days of the activity/project.
  • 6. Any publication which incorporates the teaching technique/ research project related to education has to be validated by the DEU and should include the acknowledgement of the DEU, Bharati Vidyapeeth Dental College, Navi Mumbai
