Profile :

It is with extensive post graduate biochemistry teaching experience of over 33 years at Pune University, (now named as Savitribai Phule University) and three years of experience of management of projects on role of omega-3 fatty acids in psychiatric diseases at National Chemical Laboratory, I joined newly formed Interactive Research School for Health Affairs (IRSHA) in the year 2000. Having worked as visiting scientist at Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre, New York, and with Molecular Biology training under Professor Julius Marmur at Albert Einstein College of Medicine New York, I had imbibed the basic UpToDate knowledge of Molecular Biochemistry, ready to take up bigger challenge of focused research and development activities at Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed to be University as Scientific Advisor, under the leadership of then Director, Dr. Ulhas Wagh, right from inception of IRSHA. We had by then recognised that our modern diet is painfully deficient in omega-3 fatty-acid and very excessive in omega-6 fatty acid, and is one of the major root causes of rising non communicable diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases. diabetes, respiratory diseases, arthritis, cancer, mental illness, pregnancy complications etc. So. it became our main focused objective to “BRING BACK OMEGA-3 FATTY ACID INTO FOOD CHAIN” and develop strategies to decrease omega 6 fatty acid into food chain.

To address this genuine problem, unprecedented increase in non-communicable disease (NCD) menace, facing the nation, we, at BVDU initiated a program to unleash the power of linseed through unique innovative “FLAX BIOVILLAGE” concept. We developed “ALVEL Omega-3 egg” which received coveted Lockheed Martin Department of Science and Technology,gold medal. In order to implement our Flax Bio-village concept at national level, we got the help of World Bank assisted National Agricultural Innovation Project (NAIP)in partnership with Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth and BAIF. First project was for backward integration with the linseed growing farmers and the second was for forward linkage with the consumer. In recognition of this pioneering effort of BVDU (2007-2014), BVDU was rewarded with ICAR, Linseed Value Addition Centre. BVDU formed “Real World Nutrition Laboratory Foundation”, to continue the backward linkage with the farmers and forward linkage with the consumer. For backward integration, a linseed growing farmers association called: “Gajanan Maharaj Javas Utpadak Gat Samuha” was formed at chikhalapur/ Umred, Chandrapur. In order to earnestly continue the research and development activities,“Centre of Innovation in Nutrition Health Disease (CINHD)” was instituted within IRSHA.

With the help of National Agricultural ScienceProject (NASF) in collaboration with NCL and Nimbalkar Agricultural Institute (NARI), we have developed high oleic (to lower inflammatory linoleic acid) which will be released by ICAR in couple of years.

At RWNLF, various omega-3 enriched products, Alvel Omega-3 egg, omega-3 oil, emulsion enriched feed mix, omega-3 enriched low GI atta mix, omega-3 soft gel capsule, researched and developed by CINHD are being test marketed and consumer acceptability is validated.

All the products being developed and validated by CINHD and ICAR. Linseed Value Addition Centre, are test marketed for ascertaining consumer acceptability at RWNLF, before undertaking large scale production with the established commercial establishments.
