Research Programmes

The broad aim of my research is to generate and strengthen evidence base for Traditional Medicine therapies/practices for the prevention and management of obesity, diabetes, and other insulin-resistant conditions. Though Lifestyle modification remains cornerstone of the management of these metabolic diseases, it has limited success due to poor compliance. Conversely, conventional pharmacotherapy is associated with adverse effects of varied severity. This warrants for a search of safe and cost-effective therapies/practices.

The major hallmark of metabolic diseases is adipose tissue dysfunction leading to insulin resistance, chronic low grade inflammation and oxidative stress. My group is investigating effect of herbal formulations and therapeutic procedures from Ayurveda as well as mind-body practices from yoga on these key pathophysiological processes using advanced techniques.

Being a clinician-researcher, my core expertise lies in conducting clinical studies. However, complementary studies using in vitro and in vivo models are also undertaken by my group to understand the mechanisms of the selected interventions.
