About Department

Established in 1999, the Department of Pediatrics has emerged as a tertiary pediatric and neonatal referral centre committed to offering quality care to extramural and intramural sick newborns at a reasonable cost. The Neonatal Unit at Bharati Hospital is accredited as level III B unit by the NNF (September 2019).

Overview

The Neonatal Unit at Bharati Hospital has been accredited as a level III B unit by the NNF (September 2019). It has a 14-bedded level 3 NICU, a 24-bedded level 2 NICU, and an 18-bedded level 1 NICU.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is located on the second floor of the hospital. Its maximum bed capacity is 60. This unit admits infants with a variety of medical and surgical problems requiring Level III/ II/I care and neonatal surgery, ventilation, parenteral nutrition, etc. The high-risk OPD is located on the ground floor within the Pediatric OPD complex.

NICU level 2 and 1 admits babies requiring close observation and well preterm babies graduating from NICU. The NICU has an 'Open Visiting' policy for the family. The staff encourages early unrestricted contact between parents and their babies.

There is an active Social Work involvement from an early stage if necessary and an outpatient follow-up service is provided on a regular basis several times a week. Developmental physiotherapists are actively involved with the high-risk infant and the family unit prior to discharge.

Achievements

The unit is successfully training clinicians point of care sonography and echocardiography for optimal patient management. It trained fellows over last few years, who are taking care of sick neonates in the various tier II cities of India. Dr Pradeep has authored five books related to sonography and echocardiography and is member of european echocardiography committee.He along with Dr Sujata Deshpande and Dr Nandini Malshe are reviewers for indexed Indian journals.The unit actively conducts various workshops especially related to newborn resuscitation and the Dr Nandini Malshe is the state co-ordinator for the IAP resuscitation committee.There is lot of emphasis on the quality of care delivered to the sick neonates and their family. Dr Suprabha Patnaik is the Vice president of Nationwide quality of care network. The unit has recently established a Human Milk bank, to cater to the need for human milk for the sick neonates.
