Department of Community Medicine
The major activities of the department are Teaching-Learning; Research; Service and extension; Governance and Administration. For teaching learning, there are well defined specific learning objectives, we use various interactive strategy like scenario-based teaching small group discussions, students’ seminars, guest lectures, flip class room methodology and jig saw methods, we also conduct clinico-social case presentations and discussions in the household of patient to understand the natural history of non-communicable diseases. The students get a first-hand experience of implementation of the national health programmes through their posting in affiliated Pune Municipal corporation health centers. They get opportunity to interact with ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers and community mobilizers. One of the strengths of the department is conducting research. The department continuously inculcate the research culture in undergraduate student’s right from the phase I MBBS till internship. We have maximum number of ICMR STS scholarships in the college. There are more than 50 publications of the faculty in last five years. Through our fully functional centers health centers located in rural area and corporation area service and extension activities are provided to the community in general. The undergraduate and postgraduate students and interns are actively involved various activities like screening, diagnostic camp, Behavioral change communication activities. We provide telemedicine facility to women visiting peripheral centers for assessment of the cervical pathology using smart scope. The governance and administration function is delivered through various faculties of our department through student mentoring programme, NABH process of the hospital, institutional ethics committee, administration of both peripheral centers, internship programme, website committee, vice Principal -administration, NAAC coordinator etc.
This year, we plan to implement rural family adoption programme to our first year MBBS students to give them first hand exposure to village environment and also follow-up in their subsequent year to the adopted families till internship.
