About Department

The department of emergency medicine was started on January 01 2014 when it replaced the existing casualty. The role of the casualty was expanded to form a department which will be in line with current trends in the world. The new department is expected to handle the emergency admission load of the hospital 24 x 07.

overview

The EMD caters to both adult and pediatric patients. After triaging, patient registration and documentation are done. Patients are resuscitated and after a detailed clinical examination, necessary investigations are sent. They are then stabilized and after a reasonable duration, they are handed over to the parent unit for further management.

Patients admitted to the emergency medicine ward are managed under the joint care of the primary emergency care physician and representative of the specialty unit on-call on that day. The specialty unit is decided based on the provisional diagnosis of the patient. All decisions regarding patient care are taken jointly.

Best Practices

All members of the department collaborate on an ongoing basis to improve the medical and administrative management and processes of the department. The following initiatives have yielded good results:

  • Fast tracking of critically ill patients: Implementing the principle of the golden hour, special efforts are made to reduce the door to needle, balloon and antibiotic times. This not only reduces the mortality but has a substantial effect on the morbidity and post discharge life. It also helps to reduce the financial burden on the patients’ family.
  • Having an answer bank in the department: Availability of model answers will help students to answer theory papers in an organized fashion. At the end of the periodic assessments, the students are required to prepare model answers. These answers are overseen by the faculty. Students are thus involved in the evaluation process. Over a period of time there has been a steady improvement in the performance of the PG students.

Extension Activities and Community Services provided

The department works in close liaison with the community and the medical practitioners in the drainage area of the hospital. As part of the continuing medical education imparted to the health providers the department takes regular lectures. The public at large is provided with print material and posters which are appreciated by patients and their relatives visiting the hospital. The department also undertakes training of lay persons for imparting basic life support (only chest compressions). Targeted groups e.g. police personnel, college and senior school children are also imparted training.

The EMD is an active clinical learning environment as evidenced by the programme for physicians (Emergency Medicine) and an integrated emergency medical technicians programme. The department also caters to the training of postgraduate and undergraduate doctors of the Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University Medical College. It is recognized by the Medical Council of India for the postgraduate programme in Emergency Medicine.

Teaching Learning Activity

We have a very robust training program for postgraduates, undergraduates, Paramedics and nurses. In addition to emergency medicine postgraduates (three residents per batch), we have rotations of PG students from the departments of Anaesthesia, Surgery, Medicine, Radiology and Orthopedics.

The hospital has a state of art simulation lab. Under graduate and post graduate students are trained on the advanced mannequins.

Undergraduate students are rotated in small batches for fifteen days at a time on two occasions for practical small group teaching. During internship interns are attached for fifteen day to pick up skills.

Nurses and paramedics are routinely trained by nurse educators and EMD faculty. On joining the department all of them have to undergo induction training.

Along with department of critical care medicine the department of emergency medicine conducts regular training sessions in life support management (BLS, ACLS, ATLS) for doctors, nurses and paramedics. These are carried out on high fidelity manikin (SIMMAN) for teaching airway management, resuscitation protocols and part training manikins for chest compression and intubation.

To assist the students in the learning there are facilities for academic enhancement. There is a digital and physical library in the college and also in the department.
