About Us

Against the backdrop of the proclamation of the UN Decade project “Education for Sustainable Development” on the recommendation of the Rio+10 World Summit in Johannesburg in the face of increasing environmental degradation and social inequalities, the UN member states committed themselves to entrenching the principles of sustainable development in their education systems.

The ESD Expert Net was brought into being in 2010 at the behest of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, Germany with the goal to put international dialogue about education for sustainable development on an equal footing and to exchange ideas with important emerging countries about how education can help to solve global problems.

The ESD Expert Net links experts from Germany, India, Mexico and South Africa in a global partnership. Driven by a joint vision of Education for Sustainable Development, it works towards implementation of sustainability topics in the educational landscapes of individual countries. The members represent the widest variety of institutions in the network and include partners from education and environment ministries, universities and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

Education for Sustainable Development is recognized as an integral element of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 on quality education and a key enabler of all other SDGs. Education is the lynchpin of our sustainable development agenda. It needs to be incorporated into all levels of education right from pre-primary and primary to university level as well as diverse professions. Its success relies on individuals, throughout their lifetime, acquiring relevant knowledge and developing positive attitudes to address global challenge.

Environment Education and Research

The key work of the network focuses on enabling learners of all ages with the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes to address the interconnected global challenges we are facing, including climate change, environmental degradation, loss of biodiversity, poverty and inequality through operationalizing Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).

The Institute of Environment Education and Research, Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University has been a key member of the ESD ExpertNet since its inception in 2010 and currently coordinates all activities of the ESD ExpertNet India group.

ESD Leadership Program (2021-22)

The ESD-Leadership is a blended-learning programme for interested professionals from government, academia, NGOs, school administrators and teachers, corporates in India who work in the field of environment education or ESD. This year the program is being exclusively offered to participants from India by Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University, Institute of Environment Education and Research, (BVIEER), a member of the international multistakeholder initiative on Education for Sustainable Development, the ESD Expert Net.

The current cycle (2021-22) for 10 participants runs in parallel with a similar program being offered by the Environmental Learning Research Centre, Rhodes University, South Africa, also an ESD Expert Net member paving the way for bilateral exchange. Participants have the opportunity to interact with and learn from other members of the ESD Expert Net from Germany, Mexico and South Africa.
