In recognition of the pioneering innovative work under World Bank assisted ICAR-NAIP projects, ICAR has awarded Linseed Value Addition Centre to BVDU, Pune. BVDU’s Linseed Value Addition Centre is linked to 15 linseed growing centre in the country with the major objective of “Linseed Value Addition and product diversification”.
Preamble : Human diet is deficient in in omega-3 fatty acid. Recent rise in incidences and severity of several degenerative diseases including diabetes, heart disease, cancer, arthritis, mental illness is largely attributed to the paucity of omega-3 fatty acid in our food today and skewed omega-6 to 3 ratio.
We at BVDU, therefore felt the urgent need to enrich modern food with omega-3 fatty acids. Linseed has very high content of alpha-linolenic acid, an essential omega-3 fatty acid. Therefore we developed “Flax Bio-Village Concept” at IRSHA, Bharati Vidyapeeth(Deemed to be University), Pune with the aim of resourcing omega-3 from linseed and enrich various human food with omega-3 fatty acid.
