Vaman

Induced Emesis Therapy

One of the Panchakarma procedures is medicated emesis therapy. It eliminates vitiated Kapha Dosha (acting as a toxin) accumulated in the body and decongests the respiratory tract. Daily treatments of Snehana (Internal & external oleation) & Swedana (steam bath) are administered to loosen and mobilize the vitiated Kapha Dosha. The process lasts for 5-7 days.

Indications

It is beneficial in patients suffering from Kaphaja disorders, e.g., bronchial asthma, skin diseases like vitiligo & psoriasis, chronic allergies, sinusitis, urticaria, diabetes, obesity, hyperacidity, chronic indigestion, oedema, psychological disorders, etc.

Virechan

Induced Purgation Therapy

A medicated purgation therapy removes vitiated Pitta Dosha (acting as a toxin) accumulated in the body. Ayurved believes that there is an intimate relationship between Pitta Dosha & Rakta Dhatu (blood). Virechana, being a therapy for Pitta, can be widely used for such lifestyle disorders where blood biochemistry is disturbed. Same pre procedures (as in Vamana) are followed for Virechana too.

Indications

It is beneficial in the patients suffering from vitiation of Pitta, e.g., hyperacidity, jaundice, gastritis, headache, migraine, burning sensation all over the body, skin diseases, eye disorders, chronic fever, diabetes, asthma, herpes, paraplegia, hemiplegia, joint disorders, chronic constipation, oligospermia & gynaecological disorders, etc.

Basti

Medicated Enema Therapy

According to the Ayurvedic perspective, all voluntary and involuntary movements in the body like walking, sitting and (Respiration, circulation peristalsis, transport of nerves impulses, defecation, urination, etc. are governed by Vata Dosha only. Thus, Basti is considered the mother of all treatments. It eliminates all accumulated vitiated Doshas; however, is usually practiced for Vata disorders. Classical pre-procedures are followed by administration of decoction of Ayurvedic herbal medicines/medicated oils/medicated milk, etc. through the anal route, same as in enema.

Indications

It is effective in Vata predominant diseases like joint pain, hemiplegia, vertebral disc prolapse, parkinsonism, sciatica, rheumatoid arthritis hemiplegia, paraplegia, colitis, convulsions, cervical spondylosis, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, digestive disorders, backache & sciatica, hepatomegaly & splenomegaly, obesity, piles, sexual debility & infertility, etc.

Nasya

Nasal Insertion Therapy

Administration of medicated oil through the nose cleanses vitiated Kapha Dosha from the head and neck region. Along with oil preparations, medicated milk, ghee, herbal powders are also recommended as per the requirement of the patient. According to the Ayurvedic discipline medicines administered through the nasal route have a direct effect on the brain & nervous system. Hence, Nasya is the most effective and still the simplest procedure among these five karmas.

Indications

It is useful for head, nose, eye and throat-related conditions, migraine, cervical spondylitis, sinusitis, paralysis, depression, anxiety, trigeminal neuralgia, Bell's palsy, improves memory & eyesight, insomnia, acne, premature greying of hair, headache, hemiplegia, loss of smell and taste, frozen shoulder, migraine, nasal allergies, nasal polyp, neurological dysfunctions, paraplegia, sinusitis, etc.

Raktamokshan

Blood Letting Therapy

The term ‘Rakta’ stands for blood whereas ‘Mokshan’ means to flow out of the body i.e., Letting. It is a very effective therapy in which carefully controlled removal of small quantities of blood helps to eliminate all toxins accumulated in Rakta/blood. Therefore, it is a principal therapeutic measure in all blood-borne diseases. Removal of impure blood is done with the help of a ‘leach’ (Jalauka) or by different means.

Indications

It is useful for skin disorders such as eczema, allergic dermatitis, hypertension, allergies, tonsillitis, sciatica, knee joint diseases, eye disorders, migraine, etc.

Allied Panchakarma

Massage Therapy & Sudation Therapy

This is a scientific oil massage using medicated oils. Here, the age-old traditional method is modified with the help of inputs from modern anatomy and physiotherapy experts. It is performed by a well-trained staff. This therapy is followed by sudation by medicated decoction in a specially designed wooden box. When the body starts relaxing, the mind is calmed down with pleasant music.

Indications

This treatment is very useful for physical & mental fatigue, loss of skin lustre, Vata predominant diseases, insomnia and also for rejuvenation.

Pizichil

Sarwang Dhara/Oil Bath

Pizichil is a traditional method followed in Kerala and now practiced worldwide. In this process, medicated oil, a decoction of medicinal herbs, or milk is poured all over the body in a specific rhythmic movement. It is the combination of Snehan (oleation) and Swedana (sudation) therapy. It can be used for specific parts also e.g., both knee joints, shoulder joints, etc.

Indications

It is useful in all kinds of orthopathies, musculopathies, paraplegia, hemiplegia and also in general weakness.

Udvartan

Powder Massage

Powder massage is done in a scientific way all over the body or to specific parts of the body. The treasure of Ayurvedic medicines includes so many herbs which are a boon for the skin. They are used in dry powdered form for this therapy.

Indications

It is useful mainly in obesity, diabetes, skin diseases and also as a cosmetic treatment.

Shirodhara

Procedures

Drastic changes in lifestyle over the last couple of decades have made ‘stress’ an ‘ingenuous’ global pandemic. Today stress is the root cause of many physical, as well as, mental disorders. To provide a holistic solution to such diseases, Shirodhara is a praiseworthy method as it mainly acts on the mind. In Shirodhara, liquids like medicated oils/milk/buttermilk or decoction are poured over the forehead continuously for a specific period in a specific manner. The selection of medicines depends on the disease and condition of the patient.

Indications

It is useful in headache, migraine, hair fall, graying of hair, insomnia, neurological disorders, hypertension, paralysis, depression, anxiety, psoriasis and all stress-induced diseases.

Shirobasti

Procedures

It is a process in which the whole scalp is bathed with a lukewarm medicated oil for a certain period with the help of a leather cap. The selection of the oils depends upon the disease and condition of the patient.

Indications

It is useful in neurological disorders, facial paralysis, eye disorders, chronic sinusitis, insomnia, greying and hair fall, etc.

Akshitarpana / Netrabasti

Procedures

Ayurved gives due importance to ‘ophthalmology’. Various procedures like Anjan, Aschotan, and Bidalaka are specifically mentioned for eye disorders. Akshitarpan is one of them, in which the whole eye is bathed with medicated oil or ghee.

Indications

It is helpful in correcting myopia/ metropia, burning of eyes, dryness of eyes, computer vision syndrome and redness of eyes, etc.

Katibasti

Procedures

Today’s fast-moving lifestyle gives birth to various ailments such as backaches. To cure such disorders Katibasti is one of the important procedures in which oil is kept on the site of the lumbar (back) region for a certain period.

Indications

It gives quick relief to patients having sciatica. It is also useful in the prolapsed intervertebral disc, lumbar spondylitis, sacralization of the vertebra, etc.
