Department of Kriya Sharira

About Department

The Department of Kriya Sharira primarily deals with the functioning of the human body in its normal state. 'Physiology' is the basis of 'Medicine' and in this subject, students get to learn the very basic Ayurvedic concepts like Dosha, Dhatu, Mala, Pachana, Prakruti, Atma, Mana, etc. After having understood the normal processes of the body, it is easy for one to understand pathological changes in ayurvedic view. Kriya Sharir also forms the basis of Ayurvedic pharmacology and Ayurvedic medicine.

Departmental Strength

  • Out of 5 faculties, the 2 senior-most are Ph.D. guides. 2 have completed their Ph.D. and the other two are pursuing it.
  • Kriya Sharira is a very core & fundamental subject among all subjects of curriculum as it deals with core ayurvedic concepts like dosha, dhatu, mala, agni, ojus, manas, aatma, etc. At Kriya Sharira department, we work towards making the conceptual foundations of the students strong so that they have a better understanding of preclinical & clinical subjects.

Highlights

  • Modern instruments like kymograph, response time analyzer, and spirometer are also used for experiments that explore the basics of Ayurveda. E.g., Department was a pioneer to use the Harvard Step test as a quantitative tool for the ‘Bala Pareekshana’ practical.
  • The Department conserves the same traditional method for the recitation of Shlokas.
  • The thrust is on postgraduate research, which should be more application-based on socially-oriented topics rather than theoretical ones.
  • Teaching-Learning models developed by the department e.g., a model on ‘Formation of Urine in Kidney’ and ‘Cardiovascular & Respiratory System MCQs’ are two such prominent models.
