Department of Shalya Tantra

About Department

In simple words, "Shalyatantra" is the department of surgery and is managed by a group of dynamic surgeons. The department has two fully-equipped operation theatres along with an adequate bed capacity and an efficient staff. The Ayurvedic procedures performed here include unique techniques like Kshar Sutra, Rakta-mokshana and Agnikarma.

Departmental Strength

  • The Department of Shalya Tantra deals with different surgeries. This in itself is a unique feature since procedures depicting the specialties of Ayurveda as well as modern surgeries are covered with equal ease.
  • All the cases are handled in a manner making it both caring to the patients and at the same time a learning process for all students too.
  • The constant, student-friendly learning and teaching methods employed helps in improvisation of students and upgrading of teaching skills used.

Highlights

  • Ranging from simple procedures like drainage of abscesses to the more complex ones like intracranial haematomas, laparotomies, to the complex ones like hydatid cysts of liver and pseudopancreatic cysts; orthopaedic surgeries like closed reductions to fractures of neck of femur to spine, not to forget the neurosurgeries and oncology cases, you name it and all are performed successfully here.
  • Ayurvedic procedures like Kshara sutra, agnikarma, raktamokshana, etc. are also successfully performed here.
  • Ancient procedures like agnikarma are performed in an innovative manner. E.g., Agnikarma is performed with the help of a modified Instrument, an electricity heated shalaka with a sensor for measuring the temperature at the heated tip.
